We mentioned this before here, but it’s fantastic enough to mention again. There is Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) every summer all around the country. They are in math, physics, biology, engineering, and about every other science-ey major you can imagine. Different ones require different levels of background, but they are all designed for people just like you. You get to spend the summer hanging out, doing research with a professor and other students, and getting paid for it, too!
Unfortunately some of the application deadlines have already passed, but we wanted to draw your attention to an REU still taking applications. It is a newer REU and so probably doesn’t get as many applicants. Plus it’s in Southern California so you’ll have a chance to spend your summer in the mountains at California State University, San Bernardino, and your weekends at the beach! Sounds better than staying with Mom and Dad in OK and working at the Quiki-Mart, doesn’t it?
The information about this REU is here. Note: The deadline is February 28, 2009, so you should apply ASAP! It’s probably okay if your letters of recommendation come in late as long as you get the rest in by the deadline.
If you’re interested in REUs, then go to the OU math department’s undergraduate webpage and you’ll find links to lots of different programs.
