Summer REU in Texas!

We just learned of a great opportunity to do research this summer while staying fairly close to home.  There’s going to be an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) at UT Tyler!  Tyler, of course, is just past Dallas.  Here’s the information:

The University of Texas at Tyler Mathematics Department will be hosting an NSF-funded REU site for summer 2013. The REU in mathematics is targeting minority (especially American Indian) and first generation college students, but we encourage everyone to apply. We invite talented undergraduate students to submit an application to participate in our NSF REU Site.

Students will work in groups of three with faculty advisors in the areas of combinatorics on words, knot theory, and tiling theory. In addition to research group work, students will have many opportunities to interact with faculty and other students in seminars and other social activities.

The eight week program will run from June 3 to July 26. Participants will receive a $4000 stipend to pay for housing, food, and entertainment while staying in Tyler.

Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to participate. We will begin reviewing applications on February 11 and will likely make offers by mid-March. Please check out our website http://www.math.uttyler.edu/reu/.

Another summer REU from our neighbors to the south, UT Tyler:

Dear math club advisors,

I just wanted to let you know about our mathematics REU this summer.  The PI’s in this grant are native Okies, first generation college students, and one of us is Native American, so we are hoping to get some good students from underrepresented groups (especially American Indian, First Generation College Students, and females), but all US citizens who are undergraduates qualify.  I hope you’ll spread the word about our program with the students at OU.  The stipend is $4000 (but about $900 of that goes to their housing cost).  Here is our link:

and our poster (if you want to post one) is at

Also, feel free to forward this email to any students who might be interested.
The deadline for application is quickly approaching, so tell them to apply ASAP.
Thanks!
