our own Dan Guralnik will be giving a talk on infinity or, rather, infinities.
His title: “All Those Infinities”
His abstract:
We will explore different ideas of points at infinity coming from calculus and geometry and leading to the topological idea of a compactification.
For example, while in real-valued calculus we often encounter the notions of
and
as possible limits of functions,
in complex calculus we only encounter the one value. Why is that? Are there good/bad/better ideas of infinity depending on context?
The answer, of course, is a YES, and my goal will be to try and use basic notions in topology to turn our intuitive understanding of the examples into a mathematical toolbox you might want to use.
